My July Artist Of The Month: Jessie J

My artist of the month is Jessie J. I love her style and I love that powerful voice of hers. Born in 1988, she hails from London, England singing at a young age. Having an irregular heartbeat at 11 years old, she suffered a stroke at 18 and since then vowed to take better care of herself. She studied at a performing arts school where she was cast in a production of ‘Whistle Down The Wind’ and also sung in the choir and was soon put out for “being too loud.” She later studied at BRIT School and then joined a girl group called “Soul Deep.”

She got to Gut records, which went bankrupt before any music could be released. But Jessie signed a Sony/ ATV publishing contract and became a songwriter composing lyrics for artists like Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown. It was Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA” which gained much success for Jessie. She signed to Lava records after a link to her myspace page was sent to a record executive.

Her debut album ‘Who You Are’ which, according to Ms J, took six years, was released on February 25, 2011. Her first televised appearance in America was on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Jessie recently became the opening act for Katy Perry on her ‘California Dreams Tour’ in the US. She also just did the Glastonbury festival this year. And the accomplishments keep on coming. Hope that this girl is around for years and years to come.
