Mediocrity or Greatness?: A letter to myself and others

To whom this may concern,

I heard an old saying that whatever you do, be the best at it (not the exact words, however, that’s what I got out of it).    So true because I believe no one is meant to be normal or average. Why would you want to be just average? We are too unique to accept less than what life has to offer. I think that it is our God-given right  to be great, anything less would be an insult. Insult to God, insult to our parents, and most of all…ourselves. What would make one think that they are “alright” , “ok”, “nothing special?” It could very well be an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend, a family member who did not have high expectations of you, or maybe even an instructor.  People who think it is safer to be “like everyone else”, and unfortunately had that mentality passed down to the next generation. You sometimes have to take risks to stand out above others.

See the greatness in yourself.  Your friends can see that in you and can tell you that you are extraordinary all day long but if you don’t see it, it is mainly a compliment not inspiration. It has to start with you, and it starts with the mind. The brain controls what the rest of the body does so if you think and believe you can change or reinvent your environment, everything else will follow.  It is true you have to do something you have never done to get something you never had. You will never get or even taste success by staying in your room or on that couch or surrounding yourself with negative people.

If the greatest leaders, musicians, entertainers, fashion designers, athletes, scientists, and physicians never took risks in life, just imagine how different our world would be.

Consider this:

If Martin Luther King Jr never lead a march on Washington and delivered that speech…

If  Barack Obama stayed a senator in Illinois…

If the Jacksons never left Gary, Indiana..and Michael never ever moonwalked, released Thriller, and changed music forever…

If Beyonce believed the haters and never got out of her bed to sing again…

If Ralph Lauren still worked at Brooks Brothers…

If Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and the founders of Google, Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter just graduated from college and became corporate working bees ‘like everyone else…’

If  Billy Graham was too shy to speak in front of people…

If Alexander Graham Bell never invented the telephone and was complacent with writing letters to family and friends…

If Thomas Edison decided to just continue using candles and wood for heating and light…

If  Necole Bitchie, Perez Hilton, and other famous bloggers accepted and followed a jobless market and never created a job for themselves…

If Oprah was just Oprah Winfrey, news woman, and never became one of the richest and most influential African-American women in the world…

If  Rosa Parks did give up that seat…

If  Amelia Earhart was just a housewife and never got into a plane…

If 1920 was just another year for women in the U.S. …

If Michael Jordan was just another graduate from the University of North Carolina…

If  Babe Ruth was an everyday joe who never put his hands on a Louisville Slugger…

If Muhammad Ali never fought for anything a day in his life…

If  Tyler Perry was still homeless and thought it would be impossible to one day own a production company…

If Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.  never put their mouth to a mic…

If  Hip-Hop was just a fad that never left New York…

If  Madam C.J. Walker never had a problem with hair…

If  Jesus was just the town carpenter…

Fortunately these what-ifs never became sad realities.  There will be many what-ifs, negative and positive, I pray you choose the latter and make it a possibility.  To the people who don’t want to be another face in the crowd and rather be on stage, you understand how I feel. To the people who are just going with the current, complacent yet complaining, don’t want to look beyond your couch, think it is too much trouble, and still thinking and living inside of the box, it’s time to lift that lid up and get out, get out and take your place.  Mediocrity or Greatness? I want greatness, that is why I am starting this blog.

Sincerely,

Lady Califia
